McCarthy’s dramatically composed montage manages to bring together all the excitement — gambling, sex, violence — into a striking image highlighted by the lurid green faces and hands of the robbers. Just as Cheret’s posters advertised staged public entertainments, McCarthy’s work continues the tradition for the American movie theater.
